ChexSystems is a consumer reporting agency similar to credit bureaus like Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. Instead of checking your credit rating, however, ChexSystems conducts reports on your banking history. (2)

Instead of taking your word for it, they ask ChexSystems to gather any records of bounced checks, overdrafts, or other negative banking-related things in your past.

ChexSystems gets this info from the network of banks and credit unions that share information about consumers' banking histories. In turn, ChexSystems analyzes this info and uses it to create a risk rating for each consumer.

A large number of banks and credit unions use ChexSystems, so it can be hard to find a bank that doesn't rely on ChexSystems reports. Other banks use EWS, which reports past accounts flagged for things like scams, forgery, or check kiting. (3)

What Are the ChexSystems Scores?

ChexSystems assigns customers a threat rating ranging between 100 and 899. The lower your score, the higher danger you pose as a prospective banking consumer, and the less likely you'll qualify for a new bank account, so you would like as high of a rating as possible. (4)

Why You Probably Received a Random Chime Card in the Mail

Unfortunately, it’s likely the reason you randomly got a Chime card in the mail is because someone has committed fraud and has tried to open a Chime bank account using your name and information.

Chime is a legitimate online only bank that has millions of active members. Many people consider it the future of banking.

Thankfully this time anyway, the Chime card associated with this new account was sent to your mailing address and consequently you were notified - but I wouldn’t count on that happening again making it crucial for you to take action as soon as you can to keep your banking history and finances as safe as possible.

The first thing you should do is contact Chime support to notify them of the issue.

Contacting Chime Support (What’s the Best Way)

Getting a hold of someone at Chime bank over the phone is often nearly impossible.

This is because Chime is a virtual/online bank and doesn’t have any brick and mortar locations. 

While Chime is actually a really good bank, it has its drawbacks like any bank or service and the lack of in-person customer service at times like these is often one of the main drawbacks.

You can at least try calling Chime support if you want at 844-244-6363 - but be warned, the phone system is automated so you may or may not have luck with figuring out how to actually talk to someone there. (1)

Normally your best option for getting a hold of a Chime customer service representative is by emailing Chime support and letting them know of your issue and that you need to close the new account as soon as possible.

To email Chime support, send a message to support@chime.com.

Make sure you explain to them that you believe you were the victim of fraud and that you didn’t actually sign up for a new Chime account but it appears someone else did because you received a random Chime card in the mail.

In most cases, the next step will be to close the newly opened Chime account.

How to Close the Chime Account

Once you’ve talked to Chime support over the phone or by email, they will likely request that you provide them with the last 4 digits of your social security number and a picture of your photo ID to verify your identity with them so they can close the account. 

This may seem like a bit of an odd request and somewhat unsettling considering what you’re dealing with but go ahead and do it as ultimately it’s the only way to get the Chime account closed. 

How to Prevent this From Happening Again (Crucial!)

Once the Chime account has been closed, the Chime representative will normally flag the account as fraudulent.

If for some reason they don’t, make sure you ask Chime support to do this to help prevent someone from opening an account again by using your info.

In addition, it’s probably a good idea to add a fraud alert with all 3 of the major credit bureaus for the time being for added protection.

Adding Fraud Alerts

Adding a fraud alert is a preventative measure you should 100% take if someone has tried opening a Chime account without your knowledge and/or permission. 

You’d hate to find out the hard way that they’ve done other things with your information and caused you to incur huge amounts of debt because of it (among other potential issues).

By adding a free fraud alert on your accounts, it in essence adds a red flag telling potential creditors or lenders that you may have been the victim of fraud or identity theft and that they must take extra steps to ensure that you are the one actually requesting credit, funds, etc.

Think of it as an extra (yet temporary) layer of safety.

Adding a fraud alert on Equifax

To add a fraud alert on Equifax, go to the following website: https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-fraud-alerts/.

Then click on “place an alert” and fill out and submit your information on the following online form. (2)

Adding a fraud alert on TransUnion

To add a fraud alert on TransUnion, go to the following website: https://www.transunion.com/fraud-alerts.

Click on “add fraud alert” and then choose the right fraud alert for your situation (either 1 year or 7 years). (3)

For most people, choosing the 1 year option is what you need unless you have a valid identity theft report from law enforcement in which case you can choose the 7 year option.

On the following page you’ll need to “create an account” or login to your TransUnion account to add the fraud alert to your account.

Adding a fraud alert on Experian

To add a fraud alert on Experian, go to the following website: https://www.experian.com/fraud/center.html.

Click on “add a fraud alert”. Then select the length of time that you’d like to have the fraud alert on your account (either “temporary” 1 year or “extended” 7 years). (4)

In most cases, you’d choose the temporary 1 year option unless you have a copy of a valid identity theft report from law enforcement in which case you can add an extended 7 year fraud alert on your account if you choose to do so.

Then on the resulting screen you would just fill out the online form with the relevant info and then click submit.

In Closing

In most cases, if you get a random Chime card in the mail it’s often a bad sign that means someone has fraudulently used your info to try to open a new Chime bank account. 

If this is the case, you definitely need to take action to protect your banking history and finances. Failing to do so could be a costly mistake.

The first thing to do is contact Chime customer service and have the account opened with your information closed as soon as possible and have them mark the account as fraud.

Want to know what you can and can't do with Zelle?

Zelle has an average of over 65,000 new users registering for the platform on a daily basis. 

Before you sign up for an account or if you are new to using Zelle, there are some important things for you to know.

Does Zelle have buyer protection?

Zelle does not offer its users any buyer protection or fraud protection services for authorized payments through the platform.

This means that if you buy something with Zelle, and the seller doesn’t send the item or the item is broken when you get it (for example), Zelle won't help you with getting your money back.

This is why it’s extremely important that you only send money to people that you know and trust when using Zelle (such as friends or family). (1)

Without any buyer protection, you are running the risk of being scammed and losing your money completely if you send money to someone you don't really know.

Does Zelle report to the IRS?

No - Zelle does not report to the IRS.

Because Zelle is a money transferring platform, it doesn't meet the definition of a Payment Settlement Entity and consequently Zelle doesn't have to submit a 1099-K with the IRS.

That being said, however, it is important that you report any and all income that you generate to the IRS whether you are being paid using Zelle, by check or any other means of payment. (2)

How can you block someone on Zelle?

Blocking someone from sending you payment requests in Zelle can be difficult. 

If you use Zelle through your banking app (like most people), you can try to delete the person from your Zelle from within your bank's app or on your bank's website - but this may or may not prevent that person from sending you payment requests.

If this still doesn't help, you can try to call your bank's customer support to ask them if they can block the person on their end since there currently isn't a simple way to do it yourself.

Otherwise your last option may be to disconnect and uninstall Zelle completely.  

Does Zelle work on weekends?

Yes - transferring money to or from someone using Zelle will work on weekends.

Money sent through Zelle is typically received within minutes no matter the time of day or day of the week it is including on holidays.

Does Zelle work with Green Dot?

At this time, Zelle does not work with Green Dot prepaid debit cards.

Unfortunately there is a lot of information online reporting that you can use Green Dot prepaid cards with Zelle, but that information is inaccurate.

Can you have multiple Zelle accounts?

The Zelle support site anyway says you can’t have multiple Zelle accounts.

However, if you have multiple bank accounts, you can in-fact have multiple Zelle accounts.

In order to have multiple Zelle accounts, you’d need to set up each account with a different email address or phone number.

To clarify, you can’t have multiple Zelle accounts for the same bank account.

Does Zelle accept prepaid cards?

For the most part, prepaid debit cards will not work for sending money using Zelle. (3)

However, you can use the Chase Liquid Card and the PNC Smart Access card with Zelle - but they are the exceptions to the rule really and you have to have an account with Chase or PNC to use them.

Otherwise if you try to use a prepaid debit card with Zelle, you’ll get an error message saying that the card you are trying to use is ineligible.

Can you use a credit card on Zelle?

1) Find a store that sells Green Dot MoneyPak Cards

As we've already established above, the only way to currently do this is to use a Green Dot MoneyPak card.

With over 70,000 retailers nationwide that carry Green Dot MoneyPak cards (including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, Dollar General and many others), finding a store that has them should be pretty easy for you in most cases. (2)

2) Take Your cash and Load it onto Your Green Dot MoneyPak Card

This process really couldn't be much easier.

All you need to do is load your cash onto your Green Dot MoneyPak card.

A cashier at the store your at should be able to complete this process for your. You can load between $20 and $500.

Keep in mind, adding funds to your Green Dot MoneyPak card isn't free and will cost you a flat fee of $5.95.

3) Use Your Green Dot MoneyPak Card with Cash App

Once the money has been loaded onto your Green Dot MoneyPak card, you'll have to go through the process of setting up a free account with Green Dot.

Setting up an account should only be a one time requirement though so adding cash to your Cash App account in the future should be much faster.
